Audrey Lee
Name/Pronouns: Audrey Lee (She/Her)
Major: Chemical & Biological Engineering
Mentor: Dr. Jake Greenberg (University college, Honors College and The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology)
Current research title: Investigation of Biological Properties found within Tumbleweeds
Current Project Description: I am studying Salsola tragus (tumbleweed) to explore its role in culturally relevant chemistry education and biomedical research. This project reimagines organic chemistry labs by integrating native plants, making science more accessible and engaging. Additionally, I am analyzing the plant’s potential anti-inflammatory and anti-radical properties through biological assays. These studies may uncover bioactive compounds with medicinal significance. The research highlights the intersection of culture, education, and scientific discovery.
How, why, when did I get involved in research: My journey into research began in high school with a year-long class where we investigated gene enhancers in fruit flies, a model organism for potential advancements in medical research. This experience sparked my passion for research, showing me firsthand how curiosity and experimentation can drive discovery. When I arrived at UNM as a freshman, I was eager to continue exploring research opportunities. I met with a URAD representative to learn how to get involved and connect with faculty. Around the same time, I took an Honors College class and spoke with my professor about my interest in research. Though my mentor's work focused on student success, an area unrelated to my major, but he welcomed me into the project. I took the opportunity, not knowing then that it would be one of the best decisions for my academic and professional growth.
Piece of advice: My advice to any student: never be afraid to take on an opportunity just because it’s outside your intended field. Research, any research, is an incredible learning experience, and the skills you gain will always be transferable. Getting your foot in the door is just the beginning of a journey that will shape and evolve in ways you might never expect.
