Current Research Title: Citizens of Heaven and Earth: How American Megachurch Pastors Preach on Political Identity and Engagement

Description: My study analyzes political sermons delivered at American megachurches, given from 2020 to 2024. Megachurches are a key example of how religion evolves to suit contemporary needs and tastes, but they also hold immense potential for the spreading of religious practices and ideas. Popular stereotypes cast megachurches as super-spreaders of right-wing ideologies like Christian nationalism or dominionism. But I find that megachurch political discourse often eludes these expectations, instead urging congregants away from partisan dogmatism and towards localized forms of serving their civic neighbors.

When, how, why you got involved in research: My advisor recommended that I get into research during my second semester (my first I spent in mechanical engineering). She could tell that I was passionate about studying religion and politics. She showed me numerous opportunities available at UNM to pursue my own interests in addition to the wonderful classes that Religious Studies offers.

Piece of advice: University is all about putting yourself out there and finding what does and does not work for you. Research is an amazing way to "own" your undergraduate career. I think too often, college is seen as simply the next step after high school and the prerequisite step to starting a career. So, my advice would be to try it out! Even if you don't know what you'd investigate, that is all part of the undergrad research process!
